What makes 2025 a Jubilee Year?

2025 is the Jubilee Holy Year, the 2,025th anniversary of the Incarnation of our Lord, an “event of great spiritual, ecclesial, and social significance in the life of the Church.” The concept of “Jubilee” has its origins in the Book of Leviticus (chapter 25) as a special year of reconciliation, pilgrimage, and coming home. Pope Francis has designated the 2025 Holy Year as a time to renew ourselves as “Pilgrims of Hope.”

We encourage you to visit the official USCCB Jubilee Year website to discover more resources, calendars and important updates on what’s to come!

What is the “Jubilee” Year?

Would you like to receive a plenary indulgence?

To receive a plenary indulgence during the 2025 Jubilee Year, the faithful must fulfill the following conditions:

1. Perform a Jubilee-related act, such as:

  • Pilgrimage: Visit any designated Jubilee site, including at least one of the four Major Papal Basilicas in Rome: St. Peter’s Basilica, the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major, or St. Paul Outside the Walls.
  • Participation in Sacred Rites: Engage in a moment of prayer, a liturgical celebration, or the sacrament of reconciliation at these sites.
  • Eucharistic Adoration or Meditation: Spend time in Eucharistic adoration or meditation, concluding with the Our Father, the Profession of Faith, and appropriate invocations to Mary.

2. Fulfill the usual conditions for a plenary indulgence:

  • Complete detachment from all sin, including venial sin.
  • Sacramental confession: Receive the Sacrament of Confession within 20 days before or after performing the indulgenced act.
  • Holy Communion: Receive Holy Communion within 20 days before or after performing the indulgenced act.
  • Prayer for the intentions of the Pope: Pray for the Holy Father’s intentions, with an Our Father and Hail Mary suggested.

Additionally, the indulgence can be obtained by engaging in acts of penance, such as abstaining from unnecessary distractions or superfluous consumption, and by performing works of mercy, like supporting the needy or volunteering.

By meeting these conditions with a sincere heart, the faithful can receive the plenary indulgence offered during the 2025 Jubilee Year.

Jubilee Prayer

Father in Heaven, may the faith You have gifted us in Your son, Jesus Christ, our brother, and the flame of charity kindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, reawaken in us, the blessed hope for the coming of your Kingdom.

May Your grace transform us into diligent cultivators of the evangelical seeds that make humanity and the cosmos rise unto the confident expectation of the new heavens and the new earth, when, with the powers of evil overcome, Your glory shall be manifested eternally.

May the grace of the Jubilee reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope, the yearning for heavenly treasures and pour over all the earth the joy and peace of our Redeemer, To You, God, blessed in eternity, be praise and glory for ever and ever. Amen
